McCollum & Woodward La Porte Neighborhood Project

The McCollum Woodward Street Tibma Project has been several years in the making.

In 2017, the City of La Porte acquired the abandoned Tibma Bakery building on La Porte’s east side and in 2020, cleared the land for affordable housing. In February 2022, the City of La Porte created a partnership with La Porte County Habitat for Humanity as the chosen developer on this property. We are excited to help rejuvenate this neighborhood with 5 new affordable homes to be built in a style to fit with the City’s historical legacy.

History

This was once the site of a busy local business, The Tibma bakery, designed by architect George Allen in 1915 (also designed the La Porte, First United Methodist Church on Michigan Avenue).

The bakery was run by the Tibma family of La Porte for three generations.

Local resident Carol Gardener who graduated from La Porte High School class of 1959 remembers “the wonderful aroma of fresh bread which beckoned neighborhood children, to hurry to the bakery to get a miniature loaf, always for free”.

After its closure in the early 1990s, the building was demolished in 2020. Last year the land was gifted to Habitat from the City.

Join us to Help Build Homes!

Volunteers are at the core of Habitat’s mission. They share in the joy of building homes and their efforts contribute to making the home affordable. We need crew leaders and knowledgeable skilled workers to help out but all are welcome regardless of skills and knowledge. Just bring enthusiasm and a desire to improve your neighborhood!

We build in partnership with the community – volunteers, local businesses, and construction companies contribute time and gifts in kind all help keep the homes affordable.
